You think you know a verse!

A young lady from my church has started volunteering with us a day a week and she had a go at translating Psalm 118. When we got to verse 24 we were faced with a challenge.

It's a beautiful verse, and one I have on a bracelet. But what does it mean?

Looking at it in context, it's not actually talking about God creating every day. It's actually about God achieving victory against his enemies. The NIV has "The Lord has done it this very day...", Good News "This is the day of the Lord's victory..."

There's also the issue of the Plain English Version not using words like "rejoice" and "celebrate". "Be happy" wasn't quite enough to capture the meaning. Here is our current draft for the verse:

Today God won against his enemies, so we are really happy.

Let’s have a party and sing about it. (PEV draft)

Give thanks for our volunteer, and give thanks for all the commentators and scholars whose works help us translate tricky verses. Pray for wisdom for the PEV team to communicate God's word clearly.
