The people cried to see Christ crucified

Were they sad or crying 'crucify him'?
At chapel at Nungalinya College one morning we sang a song called He Rose Again. It says,
The people cried to see Christ crucified
But He rose. He rose, he rose again.
I have previously wondered if the composer meant that the people were sad to see Christ crucified or called out because they wanted Christ crucified. Some Nungalinya students did actions to the song suggesting they were weeping. But the Kriol translation said the people "jingat blanga kilim la det cros" (sang out to crucify him).
Thankfully it's not a text from the Bible so I don't need to work out what the original author meant!
