Genesis means origin or beginning, but we are thankfully nearly at the end of the process of translation for the Plain English Version book of Genesis.
I used to wonder why it took Dave Glasgow a year to translate each book of the Plain English Version (PEV) Bible. Now I wonder how he did it so fast!
My colleague Susanna finished drafting the second half of Genesis in the PEV about a year ago. Between the Mini-Bibles arriving, audio recordings happening, editing other drafts, and supporting other languages, we've struggled to prioritise editing Genesis and checking it with speakers of Aboriginal languages. We are now very excited to have sent it to the translation consultant for the final check!
Difficulties in translation
Some of the things we found difficult to translate clearly (and sensitively) in Genesis, and which needed further discussion, included:
Conceived
Bore a son to/with/for him
Offspring/descendants
Water trough
Famine
Defiled
LORD/Yahweh
Flock (sheep and/or goats)
Grain
Thank you for your prayers! Give thanks for the progress that has been made on PEV Genesis. Pray that it will be ready for publishing soon and that it will help people know God better.
